New Business equipped to dress you as a Nun or Mouse
IF you want a nun's wimple or a mouse costume, there is a new Llanelli business that is ready to serve.
The costume and prop hire business - Costumes To Go - has located at Trostre Industrial Park .
Set up as a commercial arm of the social enterprise company Foothold, it will help support its new arts sector Foothold Theatrical Enterprises.
Its extensive and high quality stock is new on the market and has not been previously seen on television or in professional theatre.
Costumes To Go has received substantial funding from Carmarthenshire Council’s ERDF Hidden Dragon business support scheme which provides exciting opportunities for the development of community enterprises.
The business has social aims to help support and generate arts events and performances within the community - many of the shows will be performed by young people.
The business is project managed by Deborah Rees and Maureen Rhys. Both have backgrounds in the area of costume, management and the arts in general.
Maureen has worked for 20 years in the professional costume industry, designing and supplying costumes for television and professional theatre in London and Wales .
Her professional credits at the BBC include The Two Ronnies, Big Deal, Eastenders, Top of the Pops, Hotel Du Lac. Independent credits include Rhacsyn A’r Coeden Hyd, Dinas, Morfydd, Cwy Haul, Y Glas, Pelidyr X and she was nominated for a BAFTA Cymru in 1988. Maureen has also styled numerous celebrities for television appearances. She is a fluent welsh speaker which enables Costumes To Go to provide a fully bi-lingual service to their clients.
Deborah has 10 years experience in amateur drama and has combined her professional management skills and passion for theatre to help establish the new business.
Deborah said the job was exceptionally varied. “Since we have been in post we have been asked among other things, to make five nuns’ wimples, four mouse costumes and source 15 brightly coloured wigs.
“We have also sourced 12 wedding dresses and made 27 wedding veils.
“I think one of the funniest things about the job is having to try on these various items to check size, effect and suitability.”
CostumesTo Go anticipate that a web-site will be operational in the near future and brochures are almost ready for distribution.”
County executive board member for regeneration Clive Scourfield said: “This is an innovative and colourful venture helping people to get their name up in lights. I am sure we will be hearing a lot more about the business.”
